On the Green

Marking the Ball

  • Do not touch the ball.

  • Place a marker or coin behind the ball - on the other side of the ball from the pin. (I know this is not a rule, but it is the accepted route and to do otherwise could make you look like a hayseed)

  • Pick up the ball.

  • When it is your turn to putt, reverse the procedure. You may want to use the ball's logo to line up your putt.

Tending the Flagstick

  • Watch your approach to the flagstick and do not step on any one's putting "line" to the hole.

  • Stand to the side of the stick, check that your shadow is not shading the hole or the putting line, and hold the flagstick

  • Loosen the stick so that you know it will come out easily when the ball approaches

  • Grab the flag to prevent it flapping and thus being a distraction, and stand very still.

*** Don't forget to practice your putting - you use your putter more often that any other club in your bag!
