Ann Kelly has outdone herself with Ready . . . Set . . . GOLF!
The Victoria-based author, who considers herself an average golfer in a golf-crazy family, roared to the fore with Feeling Naked on the First Tee, a guide for new women golfers.
Well, Ready . . . Set . . . GOLF! is aimed at young golfers and the 87-page offering covers absolutely everything from A to Z for not only young people looking to take up the grand ol' science of divot-digging, but there's some handy tips for a lot of us who have been swinging for years.
"After writing a book for women, I realized many young golfers had the same concerns," says Kelly.
"Embarrassed to ask questions and look stupid in front of their peers. They too need to know the 'must know' etiquette seldom taught in a golf lesson."
Well, she appears to have answered just about every question from dress code, to equipment through understanding the scorecard and terms of etiquette. It is a wonderful guide to newcomers to the game, never mind kids.
Kelly tapped a number of resources in the game, from professionals to veteran golfers to school teachers and parents of young golfers and has put it into simple language that a three-yearold probably could understand.
Every page has worthwhile advice, not to mention a number of interesting tidbits such as: There are 18 holes on a golf course because that's how many there were at St. Andrews in Scotland in the 1890s when its rules were adopted by golf clubs in the UK.
It is a soft cover book that you can thumb back and forth in to not only seek answers, but learn the correct approach that will enable youngsters to practise the proper etiquette as they seek to learn some of life's most valuable lessons.
And shouldn't we all employ what Kelly terms as the Young Golfers Code: - Respect fellow golfers and the golf course; - Be courteous and polite at all times; - Play fair, be honest and take responsibility for your actions; - Improve by listening and concentrating; - Practise hard and when you play, think before you act; - Look smart and stay healthy; - Enjoy the game and your partners.
The book may be ordered by calling 1-800-668-6332. It retails for $15.95.
